Cancer Vaccine

Immunotherapy helps the body fight cancer cells by inducing, enhancing, or suppressing an immune response. One of most recent immunotherapies to receive FDA approval is Provenge, a "cancer vaccine" for men with advanced prostate cancer that stimulates the immune system to attack the cancer cells.

Robotic Surgery

One of the newest advancements in prostate removal is robotic-assisted surgery. Robotic technology allows surgeons to perform laparoscopic surgery with greater precision. Patient benefits include smaller incisions, less pain, and less blood loss with surgery. The technique requires extensive experience to master, however, so patients must be careful when choosing a surgeon.

The overall survival rate at 15 years was 35 percent for conservative management, 50 percent for radiotherapy, and 65 percent for radical prostatectomy.Urology, December 2006
